Acupuncture, a traditional medicine of China, has been practised widely over the last 3,000 years and has developed an unique understanding of the energy of the body. Acupuncture is a holistic treatment which uses fine needles to stimulate pathways of energy which run beneath the surface of the skin. By balancing the energy of the body, acupuncture helps to restore health and vitality. Chinese medicine approaches disease in a fundamentally different way from Western medicine. Chinese medicine looks at not only the disease symptoms, but also the age, habits, physical and emotional traits of an individual to form an overall picture of the patient. Health is considered a state of harmony between physical, emotional and spiritual aspects of the person.
Treatment
Traditional acupuncture includes the use of subtle diagnostic techniques that have been developed and refined for centuries. These will include a consultation about a person’s complaint, the taking of the pulse, and observation of the tongue. Treatments are based on the individual, not their illness, and symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Each patient is unique; two people with the same western diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. A principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when there is an obstruction or misalignment to the flow of the body’s qi, or vital energy. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injury are among the most common. Through the use of specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi to restore balance and trigger the body’s natural healing response. Treatment is once a week or fortnightly initially, then at longer intervals as needed. The number of treatments will depend on the problem and response of the patient.
